Coal India Limited (CIL), the state-owned coal mining corporate of India, was established in November 1975. Headquartered in Kolkata, India, CIL today stands as the single largest coal producer in the world, with a record coal production of 781 million tonnes in FY 2024–25. With a dedicated workforce of over 220,000 employees, CIL is also among the largest corporate employers globally.
As a Maharatna company under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, CIL plays a pivotal role in ensuring the nation’s energy security. In recent years, the company has embarked on a strategic diversification journey to reduce dependence on coal and align with India’s clean energy transition goals.
CIL has set ambitious sustainability targets — achieving 3 GW of solar power capacity by FY 2027–28 and 9 GW by FY 2029-30, with a vision to become a net-zero company. Parallelly, CIL is implementing clean coal technologies such as coal gasification, coal-to-chemical projects, and surface and underground coal gasification initiatives to enhance efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
In line with India’s growing focus on critical and strategic minerals, CIL is diversifying into the exploration and development of minerals crucial for the global energy transition — including lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, potash, and rare earth elements. The company has already secured two graphite blocks and one rare earth element (REE) block in India, and is actively pursuing international acquisitions and partnerships to build a strong presence in the global critical minerals value chain.
Through these initiatives, Coal India Limited aims to evolve into a diversified energy and minerals conglomerate, contributing to India’s vision of sustainable, secure, and resilient energy future.
